The danger of aggressive sales tactics

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I’ll be the first to admit it, I’m probably a little more laid back about my glass sales than I really should be.   But that’s pretty much my nature.   I believe in treating folks like you want to be treated, and I’ve never liked getting the hard sell anywhere.

So I find it irritating that this one lady from Mary Kay Cosmetics keeps calling my cell phone.   My wife worked my table for one show last season and this lady chatted her up at some point during the day, and snagged my business card.   My cell phone number is on my card, mostly so I can deduct the line (though I never do; the bulk of the calls I make are to order pizza).    This lady, who’s number is 315-247-2685 should you want to call and order, or just market to her in kind, has called no less than 5 times since December asking for my wife.   No less than 5 times has that call gone unreturned.   You’d think she’d take a hint or something and stop calling, because at this point she’s just coming off as sad and pathetic, and frankly desperate.  It makes me wonder what they put in the punch at those meetings to make people so irritatingly aggressive.

But more about me.  I’ve eschewed such things as mailing lists and newsletters.   Maybe I should try them, but honestly again it goes back to the golden rule, and for the most part I hate getting stuff that’s not much more than marketing junk.   Art Jewelry magazine does that.  I was hoping to get something marginally interesting via their newsletter (I’m a subscriber to their magazine…well worth the money) but most of their emails are just “buy this new interesting tool we love oh so very much”.  Um, no thanks.

Go easy on your customers, or at least use a 3:1 ratio of useful, non-marketing info to sales content to avoid turning them off.

Have fun out there!

Happy new year!

Happy New Year from Munkin Arts LLC!

What’s up for the coming year?   I wish I knew.  If I could tell the future I’d certainly play lotto more.  But here are some things I’m working on as far as the glass goes:

  • Goblets: I’m starting to get better at these.  It’ll be nice to have some sale worthy ones rather than just ones I drink from
  • Chess sets: Did you happen to see the one I made as a Christmas gift?  I want to make more of them.
  • Oil lamps: I like making these but I haven’t been as much as I should.
  • Salt & Pepper shakers: I still haven’t gotten these right.
  • Adult items: I want to expand this line.  I’m hoping to make more female oriented items and I’m working on R&D for some male directed pieces (sorry, that’s all I’m saying for now)
  • Drawer/cabinet pulls: These are fun but tricky; tricky because I don’t like keeping them in inventory, but I have to make a few to have as demo pieces.   They’re really more of a custom order, ya know?
  • House parties and demos: In 2010 I’m looking to get more one on one time with my customers.  If you’d like to have me come in to do a house sales party and do an onsite demo, get in touch.
  • An extremely limited re-opening of my Etsy shop.  There’s nothing there now, so no link.
  • Super top secret items:  I’m working on something different, but it’s in the design stages at the moment.

In the next few weeks I’ll be announcing a three day sale in my ArtFire shop.  Keep an eye out!

Happy New Year!  Don’t forget that I’m happy to entertain custom orders, so don’t be shy about using the contact link.  The only thing I don’t/won’t make is pipes.  I just don’t do them.
