Facebook – Clear as mud

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I heard back from a human being!  I just wish it were useful.  From the response below it seems that posting any number of things with any level of frequency might trigger a block.  So, basically use Facebook at your own risk.  The random banning will likely continue just so you know Facebook cares.

Tom,

Facebook has these limits in place in order to prevent behavior that others may find annoying or abusive. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Keep in mind that warnings and blocks are sent out based on a number of different factors, such as speed, time, and quantity. For this reason, we ask that you monitor the nature and rate at which you use site features, rather than attempting to abide by any numerical limits.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide additional information about this system. When you are allowed to resume using this feature, we recommend that you proceed with caution to avoid reaching the limit again.

Thanks for your understanding,

P.S.  as of 6/29 I’ve still got the ban on my account as a result of using their site.  So if I don’t reply to one of your comments with a method other than a private message, I apologize.  it’s what I have to work with.

Smash ‘em in effigy!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Fed up with the twits running Twitter?  Kicked out of your space on MySpace?  Faced on Facebook?

Well you can’t really smack the engineers behind social networking sites around, but now you can smash them in effigy.

I introduce to you..the Social Networking Website Engineer Figurine

Social Networking Website engineer figurine

Smash my geek up!

These aren’t officially listed for sale yet on my Etsy site, but I plan to have a few made and posted by this coming Sunday.  I will of course accept pre-orders through my main site at $10.00 each INCLUDING first class domestic shipping.  Also available with a glow in the dark shirt for an extra 5.00.  That’s not gouging, the glow glass is simply more expensive.

This little fellow’s made right here in the US out of borosilicate glass.   What’s that mean?  Toss it in a bonfire, it might survive!

As an added bonus, if you send me back a picture of how you took out your rage on your little geeky analog, I’ll send you back a coupon for free shipping on your next purchase from my Etsy site.  I plan to create a gallery of social networking site inspired rage on my main site.

The little fellow above?  He’s destined to meet Mr. Hammer this weekend.  Don’t forget…wear your safety glasses!  I wonder if the guys at BlendTec would like one?

UPDATE:  Now available in my Etsy shop!

Facebook ban -the saga continues

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I finally heard back from Facebook, I think.  It smacks of form letter as opposed to actual communication, but hey, given they’re a  faceless company devoid of contact forms, I’ll take what I can get.

Their response, mine follows:

Hi,

We have noticed that you recently received a warning from our system. You received this warning because Facebook determined that you were going too fast when writing on Walls. Facebook has limits in place to prevent behavior that others may find annoying or abusive. These limits restrict the rate at which you can use certain features on the site.

If you have also been blocked from writing on Walls, please note that these blocks can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Unfortunately, we cannot lift the block for you. When you are allowed to resume using this feature, please proceed with caution to avoid reaching the limit again. Please be aware that the threshold at which you are warned is not a specific number, but rather determined by different factors (such as speed, time, and quantity). For security reasons, we are unable to provide additional information about this system. We apologize for any inconvenience.

If your inquiry was not related to the warning you received, simply reply to this email and we will assist you further.

Thanks,

The Facebook Team

My response back:

What constitutes too fast?  No more than 1 a day? Hour? I posted on two walls within about 30 minutes.  If people don’t know the rules, they don’t know how to avoid breaking them.

Unless Facebook is really a shell company for the TSA that is, in which case the apocalypse really has arrived

Facebook issues

Hi folks!   I don’t know what’s going on.  I don’t know why it’s going on.  But for making two innocent inquiries as to the well being of people on my friends list this morning via their walls, I’m now banned from posting to other people’s walls, leaving comments on my own items, or on the items of other people.  There’s no information as to how long this will last either.

So if you don’t hear from me on there, it’s not from a lack of trying.   Feel free to email me.  In the mean time, tonight I’ll look into Twitter.

In other news I may start making little geek engineer figurines and market them as Facebook engineers for people to smash in effigee.

Stay tuned.

Screw you Facebook

UPDATE: I’ve sent an email to disabled@facebook.com, an address I found on The Consumerist hoping I can get this dealt with a little faster.  Given the article, I’m not exactly optimistic.
